There is much debate on frozen versus fresh fruit and vegetables. This is especially true when it comes to foods that are popular for their flavour, such as onions and garlic.
Many people add these ingredients to their dishes, not because they are particularly attractive or even necessary in some cases, but because of their taste. So, it is normal that some people question whether they should or shouldn’t freeze them.
Freezing your fresh produce is the best way to preserve it. And contrary to popular belief, frozen veggies taste just as good and are just as nutritious. Garlic is no exception.
Freezing garlic can also prolong its shelf life, preventing it from rotting and gaining a foul smell. Here are some useful tips for freezing your garlic bulbs:
- Freshness: make sure your garlic is fresh, straight from the supermarket. There is really no point in freezing something that is already stale or damaged.
- Prolonged life: at room temperature, whole garlic bulbs can last for up to four months. However, after being peeled, garlic cloves will not last that long. You can freeze peeled or unpeeled cloves.
- Chop up your cloves: chopping your cloves and freezing them that way can make the process of preparing your meals that much easier. Chopped, minced, pureed, prepared into a paste, it all works! You can even fit these into an ice cube tray, ready to use in stocks or soups.
There is no doubt that there are advantages to freezing your fresh produce. Of course, there are some preparation steps, but when the time comes to cook your meal, you will find frozen vegetables to be much more practical.
