Onion powder packs a punch of flavour in a convenient, long-lasting form. It’s a versatile ingredient used in various culinary applications, from season mixes to soups and sauces.

The process begins with harvesting the onions at their peak to ensure they have the right balance of flavour and nutrients. Once harvested, they are transported to a processing facility where they are cleaned to remove any dirt and other impurities.

After cleaning, the onions need to be peeled. This step is crucial as the outer layers of the onion, including the skin, are removed to expose the fresh, usable parts underneath. For industrial production, this process is done on a large scale using specialised equipment. Industrial onion peelers, like the one M&P Engineering manufactures, play an extremely important role here. Our machines are designed to efficiently remove the onion skins without damaging the delicate layers underneath, ensuring maximum yield.

Once peeled, the onions are sliced into uniform pieces and placed into dehydrators. Dehydration is a critical step, as it removes the moisture from the onions, preventing spoilage and concentrating the flavour.

After the onions are fully dehydrated, they are ground into a fine powder. The grinding process needs to be precise to achieve a consistent texture. The resulting onion powder retains the full flavour of fresh onions but in a form that is shelf-stable and easy to use.

The efficiency and quality of onion powder production are heavily dependent on the peeling process. Our industrial onion peelers are specifically designed to handle large volumes of onions quickly and efficiently. By ensuring a clean peel and minimizing waste, our peelers contribute to the production of high-quality onion powder that meets the demands of the food industry.

M&P’s Large Onion Peeling machine uses self-adjusting floating knives to top, tail, and peel onions of 45mm to 115mm diameter. The machine is easy to operate due to its simplistic mechanism and design and thanks to the dry peeling process the product remains in pristine condition once it has been peeled.

M&P Engineering offers a wide range of food processing machinery in addition to onion peeling machines, including freshcut equipment such as our Carousel Grid Cutting Machine and our Radish Top & Tailer.
