Onions are used all over the world and are one of the most versatile and accessible vegetables. Common onions grow in 3 different colours: red, white, and yellow, each having their own characteristics.
Which type of onion you decide to use mostly comes down to personal taste, but some might fit better in certain recipes than others.
Yellow onions are the most common onion used in everyday cooking, because they have a nice strong flavour while still being not too strong. They make great additions to all sorts of recipes, including stews, soups, and meat dishes. They have a yellow/brown skin and white flesh. When cooked they turn a rich, dark brown colour. They have a distinct sweet, yet tangy taste.
White onions have all white skin and all white flesh. They have a slightly milder flavour than the yellow onion. This makes them a perfect option for people who prefer a milder onion flavour or recipes where a very strong onion flavour is not desired.
Red onions are most commonly used raw, in dishes such as salads and sandwiches. They have a red/purple skin and white flesh. These are generally the most mild and sweet, which makes them a perfect addition for non-cooked dishes, while also adding a pop of a colour to your plate.
Other than fresh, onions can be bought chopped, frozen, canned, caramelised, pickled, powdered, and dehydrated. Powdered onion is a popular ingredient used to season food in cooking. Powdered onion is made by finely grinding dehydrated onions and are generally made from pungent bulb onions, giving the powder its distinct strong odour.
M&P Engineering is based in the UK and produces food processing equipment that is used across the globe.
Our products include the Large Onion Peeling machine, which utilises a dry onion peeling process and processes up to 750kg of onions per hour. The advantages of a dry peeling process is that due to no water usage there is no waste slurry to deal with.
M&P Engineering has sold hundreds of Onion Peeling machines worldwide. Our machine is very easy to use and maintain, and it produces peeled onions comparable to hand peeled onions.
Another key benefit of our Onion Peeling machine is its versatility. The easy-to-use machine works well with onions of different sizes and does not require changing parts.
