When Autumn arrives and Halloween celebrations begin, many people take part in the game of apple bobbing. Known by different names depending on where you are, it remains one of the simplest yet most entertaining seasonal traditions.

The rules are straightforward: fill a large tub with water and place enough apples on top so they float across the surface. Since apples are naturally buoyant, they bob up and down, creating the challenge. Players then try to retrieve an apple using only their mouths, with hands firmly placed behind their backs to ensure fair play.

With apples at their best during this season, it is no wonder they feature so prominently in autumn traditions. Not only do they add colour and flavour to the harvest months, but they are also packed with nutrients.

Autumn is also the time when some of the most popular apple varieties reach their peak:

  • Granny Smith: Vibrant green, crisp and tart, perfect for both eating fresh and for cooking.
  • Pink Lady: Distinguished by its pink blush, this variety is sweet, firm and ripens beautifully in late October.
  • Fuji: With a unique mix of red, green and yellow skin, Fuji apples are deliciously sweet and often used for making apple sauce.
