As we’re now firmly in flu season, people are turning to any remedies possible to cure their coughs and colds, including hot drinks, warm blankets, and lots of rest. However, alongside these traditional remedies, did you know that onions are a known home remedy? Onions have been used for generations, across a range of cultures, to ease the symptoms of a cold.

Onions are a natural source of antioxidants, sulphur compounds, and flavonoids, which are believed to have anti-inflammatory properties, which is why onions have been linked to immune support for generations. Whilst this does not mean onions will cure your cold, they may well help with your overall wellbeing and management of symptoms during your illness.

Although there’s no hard scientific evidence that onions can cure the common cold, their nutritional value means that they can still be a healthy addition to meals and support a healthy lifestyle. It’s important to remember that rest, hydration, and medication remain an essential part of curing a cold, especially if symptoms persist.

However, if you’re wanting to try a home remedy to feel better, a popular onion-based remedy still used today is placing a cut onion in a room overnight, which is believed to help clear congested airways and help ease breathing. Another method is through creating an onion syrup, by adding slices of onion and honey to a jar and allowing it to release its juices, which can be used to soothe coughs. Breathing in the steam from hot water with onion has also been used to clear sinuses and ease congestion.
